We paid a customer over $10,000 for this coin! This stunning $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle from 1880 is incredibly difficult to obtain in uncirculated (or mint state) condition, so you can imagine our surprise when one came through our door.
There were just under 900,000 gold double eagles made in total in 1880, and the Philadelphia Mint struck only 51,420 of that total, with the larger share of mintage coming from San Fransisco. Because this gem was minted in Philadelphia, scarcity and rarity are enhanced.
The large size and heavy weight of the Liberty Head $20 Gold Coins, makes them favorites among both numismatists and gold bullion investors alike. Needless to say, the customer was very shocked and ecstatic to learn it would be a $10,000 pay day!
